Oscars 2014 Ratings: Did Ellen DeGeneres' Pizza and Selfies Help Attract a Big Crowd?

Ellen DeGeneres, pizza, selfies, and flubbed teleprompter lines brought in a big audience for the 2014 Oscars.
The 2014 Academy Awards had 40.2 million viewers and 12.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic, according to early Nielsen numbers. These figures are subject to change. The 2014 Oscars telecast ran from 8:30 p.m. ET until approximately 12:05 a.m. ET.
The 2014 ceremony was on par with the 2013 ceremony. Family Guy's Seth MacFarlane served as host of the 2013 telecast and it brought in more than 40 million viewers and a 13 rating in the 18-49 demographic.

The few surprises at the 86th annual ceremony came from the host, not the actual winners. DeGeneres ordered pizza for the guests, crashed Twitter with celebrity selfies and literally surprised nominees Sandra Bullock and Leonardo DiCaprio at one point.
"I thought it would crash," DeGeneres told E!'s Marc Malkin about Twitter at the Governors Ball after the Oscars ceremony. "But I didn't know everyone would do it. What's funny is that Lupita's brother is the most prominent. And then Jared came running over to be in it. And Angie got it in. I didn't expect all that."
The 2014 Academy Awards featured performances by Pink, U2, Pharrell, Idina Menze and Karen O. Bette Midler performed the classic "Wind Beneath My Wings" during the in memoriam segment.
