Those familiar with former pop artist turned country songstress Cassadee Pope know of her beginning with pop/rock band Hey Monday as their lead singer. With the band on a hiatus since December 2011, Pope kicked off her solo career with a self-released EP and soon auditioned for a spot on the third season of The Voice. Her blind audition may have not been one of my favorites in the show's short history, but with live performance experience under her belt, I knew Pope would be a force to be reckoned with. The number of devoted fans from her previous gigs did not hurt either. Cassadee was eventually crowned the winner of The Voice season 3, charting four songs on the Billboard Hot 100 in the process, and has been slowly working her debut album since then. Six months since the show's end, Pope has a new single to show her fans the hard work and effort she is putting into her upcoming project.
"Wasting All These Tears" is a country/pop, radio-friendly effort, in the vein of Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood. Pope is shedding her pop/rock past in exchange for a sound she had been perfecting with The Voice Blake Shelton during her time on the singing competition show. Featuring a dark lyrical theme similar to what would be found on most of Underwood's albums, Pope gives a convincing performance that definitely puts Miss Swift to shame. "You left me, standing on the corner crying, feeling like a fool for trying", Pope sings about a jilted lover. The artist seems to be finding the strength to stand on her own, a message any person can relate to when they hear the song on the radio.
Pope had a decent career with Hey Monday, but I'm thinking her audience will only get bigger with the country path she is carving out for herself. Country sells and Pope, even though Avril Lavigne sounding vocals come out once in a while, has a voice that the country audience could latch on to. "Wasting All These Tears", out June 4, is a meaningful piece of country with a hint of the familiar pop formula that has immense crossover potential. The lyrics tells a somewhat somber story, Pope's vocals are strong from beginning to end, and the production only helps the new single reach its full potential. I may not have been the biggest fan of Cassadee Pope when she jumped onto The Voice stage, but I'm now excited for her debut.
